Why do children get silver spoons for their first tooth and christening

Today, many people give silver spoons to the children of their friends and relatives. They give silver spoons, as a rule, for birth, the first tooth or baptism. This is a very original and useful gift, especially since the variety of silver spoons for children is so great that more than 1000 different types are produced in Russia alone. At the same time, few people can say – why do children need silver spoons? Where did this tradition come from? Let's try to find answers to these questions.

The history of the custom

The custom of giving silver spoons to children appeared a long time ago. The saying "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" meant in old England that the child was born into a wealthy family, and his future is quite rosy and predictable. Naturally, only the rich estates could boast of silver children's spoons, as well as other silver utensils, while they wished their children happiness both in the palace and in the poorest hovel. And that's when the rule appeared to give all children, regardless of their property status, silver spoons. A silver spoon presented to a child seems to provide him with a long and happy life.

In addition, the sanitary situation in those distant times left much to be desired even in the homes of wealthy lords. The plague left entire cities deserted. The fact that silver kills most microbes has been known since ancient times. Even Alexander the Great, who faced all the hardships and hardships of long-distance campaigns on a par with his army, took food exclusively from silver dishes and demanded to use silver objects from other soldiers in order to minimize losses from various diseases. Thus, to give a silver spoon to a child meant not only to wish the child a happy future, but to help him stay healthy in the conditions of constant epidemics of the Middle Ages.

It should also be noted that the material from which the silver spoon is made is a precious metal. 925 sterling silver, from which silverware and silverware are produced almost all over the world, is often called sterling silver. This name also came to us from England – English pounds were made of 925 sterling silver. After all, the very name - pound sterling, means nothing more than a pound (unit of weight) of 925 sterling silver (sterling). The weight of an average teaspoon, namely the size of most children's spoons, is 20-30 grams. A children's silver spoon was considered a very good and expensive gift. From the moment of receiving such a gift, the family in which this child grew up acquired quite liquid and expensive property.

Why is a silver spoon given for birth, first tooth or baptism?

Silver spoon for birth

The gift of a silver spoon for the birth of a child embodies the wish of happiness and a quiet, secure life. This tradition comes from the English saying "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" (see above). Anyone can give a silver spoon for the birth – friends, relatives, parents themselves. When a silver spoon is given for birth, in addition to health and happiness, as a rule, they wish "... that this small silver spoon would serve as the beginning for a large set of family silverware."

Silver spoon for christening

The custom of giving a silver spoon for baptism dates back to the description of the visit of the little Christ by the magi, who presented him with precious gifts. Thus, the gift of a silver spoon for baptism, as it were, teaches the child to accept the holy gifts. In the future, after a short time, parents will start feeding the child with the same silver spoon, and then, according to our ancestors, the child will take food and communion more calmly. As a rule, godparents give a silver spoon for baptism. Most often, silver spoons with an Orthodox theme are presented for baptism. It can be an image of Jesus, angels, saints or a cross.

Silver spoon for the first tooth

For a reason, there was a tradition to give a child a silver spoon for the first tooth. It just so happened that most often the loss of the first tooth in the baby suggests the beginning of his feeding. This is where it becomes necessary to purchase a separate silver spoon for the child.

From the point of view of hygiene, the baby should have a personal, only his spoon. After all, the immature child's body is not ready to resist microbes and bacteria. A silver spoon, specially presented to the baby, will be different from other spoons and no one will accidentally confuse it. In addition, given the bactericidal properties of silver, the same spoon will once again disinfect the oral cavity of your child.

A silver spoon for the first tooth is usually given by the one who is the first to notice the tooth that has fallen out. To give a child a silver spoon for the first tooth is considered, so to speak, a privilege. Since the role of a silver spoon for the first tooth is quite obvious, it is not difficult to guess how it should look. It should be an interesting and beautiful spoon from the point of view of the child. On the handle there can be animals (dogs, pussies, bears, elephants, etc.) boys or girls, airplanes or cars. Anything and preferably with blackening, enamel or gilding. If only your baby could eat better with this spoon.

Other traditions

In tsarist times there was another custom, common in some gymnasiums. When the child entered the gymnasium, he was given a silver dessert spoon, and when he graduated from the gymnasium – a silver tablespoon.

Strangely enough, in the age of iPads and iPhones, this tradition continues to live in our time. There are cases when silver teaspoons (in one case, silver dessert spoons) were awarded to high school graduates, and the school's coat of arms, number and year of graduation were depicted on the spoons.

There is also a case when, at one of the courses of the Military School, young lieutenants received silver tablespoons with the monogram of the academy, the year of graduation and the inscription "For Luck" as a gift

Silver spoons in our time

As mentioned above, the custom of giving children a silver spoon has survived to this day. And it doesn't matter what it is: a silver spoon for the first tooth, for a birth or a gift from godparents. It is important that a little person is given the first expensive thing that most of us carry through life, while wishing happiness, health, good luck from the bottom of our hearts. In fact, almost every day grandparents, moms and dads, uncles and aunts come to our store for silver spoons for babies. And most of them still cherish their first silver spoons and fondly remember the people who gave them the first precious metal. We often hear how another middle-aged woman in our store enthusiastically addresses her companion: "Look, look, a silver spoon with a parrot, Aunt Masha gave me this for my first tooth. I still use it." And in the eyes of this lady there is such warmth and gratitude… That's what traditions are called. In the following articles, we will definitely return to table silver as our traditions and try to figure out why it is so important to return to these traditions right now. Here we also note that your child's first silver spoon is the first step towards home–made silverware - beauty, tradition, health.
